If you have had a chance to read my previous posts, you
should know by now how I feel about my hair. Let me summarize it to three
words: Identity- Crown- Diversity
No matter how good I feel about my precious cloud, there are
moments when I wish I could just go back to using a relaxer. Here are 10
reasons that contribute to this feeling.
1. VOLUME. I do not have the volume of most natural
hair and the more my hair grows, the more it loses the puffy “afro” look. Topping
it all, air blows my hair in every direction possible.
2. SHRINKAGE. It is a love-hate relationship with
this one, it feels good to be able to rock different length of natural hair at
times. But not being able to show the actual length of my hair can be stressful.
3. WORK. Everything about my hair is
calculated and planned. From the daily routine, to the weekly wash and the monthly
treatments. I put all those in my hair diary.
4. LENGTH. When i started i was obsessed with
length, I felt my hair was not growing. The longer it got, the longer it took
to do my normal after-wash twist. The harder it also is to maintain the growth.
5. BREAKAGE. I try as much as possible to not play
with it so I don’t break it.
6. STYLING. My hair is never in place when I dare
to leave it out. I start the day with my hairstyle and my hair decides what it
wants to do for the rest of the day.
7. HAIRSTYLES. Most of the tutorials, pictorials
for styles don’t look good on my hair. Either not enough volume or not enough
curls. i dont get the same results. Simply not as easy as it suggests.
8. PROTECTIVE STYLES. I have to choose a protective
style that will not damage my edges which suffered already from all these years
of tight braids. It is even harder to hide damaged edges when you are natural.
9. HAIRDRESSERS. They sometimes charge extra, because you
have natural hair and practically comb you bald to make your hair smooth
before braiding.
10. BRAIDS. I had to say goodbye to corn rows with
the smooth extensions. It is pain to make the lines in your hair, extra pain
for pulling your hair and extra plus pain for the flawless look to match the
extension. And on top of it, you have to take the hair down as soon as your
natural hair is sticking out of the cornrows.
That being said do I regret my choices? Do I feel like
buying a relaxer?
Not at all. I am enjoying every bits of this journey to claiming my identity. Sometimes when I catch myself thinking what a jungle on my head. I just think of myself as the mistress of the jungle. The mistress that has tamed every corner of the jungle and now owns it. i can assure you, it is a great feeling
